From the inception of the College BA/BSc. Degree Courses in the various subjects were offered and Malayalam was taught as an additional language. B.A. Degree Course in Malayalam was started in the academic year 1967-68. The Department of Malayalam came into existence on 17-07-1964. Prof: G. Sankara Pillai, the renowned and well-acclaimed play writer and the atrician was the first head of the Department. Sri N. Neelakantan, Sri K. Vijayan Nair, Smt V. Maheswari, Sri K. Prabhakaran and Sri R. Gopalakrishna Pillai were on the staff as lecturers. Dr. Poovattor Ramakrishna Pillai was the lecturer in Sanskrit. Smt. P.N. SaraswathiBai, Sri P. Bhaskaran Nair, Smt. K.Vijayarnma and G. Raman Pillai, Sri.N.Gangadharan Nair joined the department later. Prof. G. Sankara Pillai served the Department as Head for ten years. He left the Department when he was appointed as Director of School of Drama, Calicut University. Sri N. Prasanna Kumar, Sri. P. RadhakrishnaKurup, Dr. B.K. Krishnan Nair Dr. R.S. Rajeev, Dr. T.A. Geetha Devi, Dr. S.SudarsanaBabu and Dr.C. Unnikrishnan, Sri. Aathman and Dr.T.Madhu, Smt. Ragi R.G. joined the department later.
