The Department of Chemistry embarked on its long march to glory during the academic year 1964-1965 with two teachers as staff imparting instructions in chemistry to the pre-degree students of group I & II. The department was upgraded to degree level with chemistry as the optional main in the year 1979-80. In addition, BSc Polymer Chemistry was started during the year 1993-94. The Department reached another milestone when MSc course in Chemistry was started in the year 1995-1996. The year 2004-05 saw the University of Kerala recognize the department as an approved research center. The Department has a strength of 12 teachers and 4 non-teaching staff, with 11 out of 12 permanent faculty members holding PhD. Five faculty members are Research guides and 17 students have registered for PhD in the department. The department is consistently producing one of the best results in the University.
